Salutations, crafty friends! This month’s Paper Adventures Team Blog Hop sure is a scintillating one. If you’ve already been hopping along and have arrived here from our sensational guest designer Tina (I am such a fan of all her gorgeous work) then you already know our theme this month is “S”. Being September, and the start of Spring, with plenty of sunshine delighting us this week, it’s the perfect theme to get some creative mojo flowing. There are so many possibilities – from stars, stripes, and spots, to sentiments, to squares, and, well, STAMPS! So much to choose from.
I start, once again, with a rather shocking confession: I hate The Beatles. Yes yes, I know, I fully acknowledge their significant contribution to a generation’s culture and to music history, but I just really can’t stand most of their music. I like lots of covers of their songs (Joe Cocker’s With A Little Help From My Friends is one of my favourite songs), just not when they are performed by the Fab Four. Sorry.
Why on earth am I confessing such a controversial thing about myself? Because I have “I am a Walrus” stuck in my head. And why do I have that stuck in my head? Why, because of tonight’s creation!
I have made a Surprise Spinner Card. This is the first time I’ve made one – there are lots of tutorials out there and I probably followed Jennifer McGuire’s the closest, although they are actually really simple so I pretty much made it up as I went along.
My project was also largely influenced by this fabulous creation which my beautiful and clever just-turned-nine-years-old daughter Heather made this week all on her very own. One of the stamp sets she received for her birthday was the super cute “We’ll Walrus Be Friends” and she was kind enough to let me borrow it.
Along the way I tried to add as many “s” elements as I could, so let’s see how many there are…
For maximum S value, I made a square card – the base cardstock of Thick Whisper White is 11″ x 5.5″ for a finished card of 5.5″ square. Next I added a 5 1/4″ layer of Seaside Spray run both ways through the Subtle Embossing Folder. A Stitched Rectangle of (retired) Tranquil Textures DSP (in Night of Navy and Soft Sea Foam) is layered under a Stitched Square of Whisper White with this fabulous walrus fella stamped in Memento Black ink and coloured with Stampin’ Blends. S count so far: 8!
Upping the S value are Stitched Stars cut with the gorgeous new dies from the new Holiday Catalogue (that will be favourites long past the holiday season, for sure). They are cut from the Noble Peacock Foil Sheets for a bit of shine. And the “smile” sentiment, white heat embossed on Smoky Slate and fussy cut, is from the stamp set Capture The Good.
As cute as the outside is, the real magic happens when you open the card. This is the spinning surprise inside, two walruses stamped and coloured on Scalloped Circles and glued back to back.
If I was at all good at taking video (which I am not) I would include one here, but you can use your imagination, I’m sure! When you open the card the panel in the middle pops out and the image in the centre spins around. I love the way with these two walruses it looks as if they are playing “peekaboo”.
Behind the walruses is a panel of non SU! paper from my stash which just went too perfectly not to use.
The interior panel is more Seaside Spray cardstock. I spent a long time playing around with ideas on how to decorate the left and right panels but in the end left them blank as I think the focus is, quite rightly, on the spinning element in the centre. I may add a sentiment stamp to it later – any of them from We’ll Walrus Be Freinds would work well, depending on what I want to use this card for.
For now, I think he’s going to sit happily on my desk amusing me with his super cute walrus face playing peekaboo.
So how did I go with the “S” count? I count 16. Did I miss any?? Comment below if you find another “S” element that I missed. And please, if you are a fellow Beatles hater, or if you now have I Am a Walrus stuck in your head (sorry), also leave me a comment below. Would be nice to know my crazy has company.
Next up you are hopping over to Sheila (another S!) who shall delight us all as always with one of her beautiful cards. Make sure you hop through all the team’s posts to see what they’ve been up to this month.
Thanks for stopping by,
