CASE-ing the Catty #270 – Favourite Retiring Punch

CTC

Happy Sunday, crafty friends! Time for another round of the CASE-ing the Catty Sunday Challenge. As we approach that magical date of June 3 when the brand new Annual Catalogue 2020/21 is released, we are taking one last look at the 2019/20 AC. This week our focus again is retiring punches and dies.

The punch I’ve chosen this week is, admittedly, not my favourite, but one that I really haven’t used as much as I would have liked to – the Hot Air Balloon punch and it’s coordinating Above The Clouds stamp set.

I’m sure this is one of the things I pre-ordered last year and was excited to get. I love a good punch bundle, and I love hot air balloons, they are so cute! But I never really made friends with it. Does that ever happen to anyone else? Anyways I was determined to give it a good go again, so I had a good look at the catalogue image above. What I really liked the look of was the pieced balloon on the square card at the bottom of that image. See how the top and bottom parts of it are solid cardstock and the underneath a layer in ink? That looks pretty cool, right? I took that idea, the stitched circle of clouds, and the round sentiment stamping, and created these two cards off of that inspiration.

My first version features the beautiful new In Color for 2020-22, Misty Moonlight.

This is a really lovely blue that fits nicely in the existing colour line-up. It is like a lighter version of Dapper Denim from a couple of years ago. Since we don’t have the inks yet I have teamed it with a lighter blue ink in a similar hue, but the top and bottom of the balloon are Misty Moonlight cardstock.

On a strip of Misty Moonlight cardstock is a piece from the new DSP collection, World Of Good. It has this beautiful gold foiling on some patterns. I have a *thing* for maps (I collect antique maps) so I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this beautiful paper.

Here’s a quick share of another card I made with the same DSP, so you can see those beautiful gold lines shining in the light. It was hard to cut into this gorgeous 12×12 piece, but I steeled myself and did it.

My second card features another new In Color, Bumble Bee, and a strip cut from the Flowers for Every Season Memories & More pack. Don’t forget that these cards can be used for so much more than scrapbooking, and don’t be afraid to cut them up!

On both cards, I’ve used a stitched circle and stamped around the edge of this with the “Hi, friend” sentiment from Above the Clouds. Being a photopolymer stamp you can bend it slightly on your block to do this more easily, although the short sentiment works well for this technique anyway.

Which punch or die will you be sad to see retire? Or is there one that, like me, you haven’t had nearly as much use from as you would have liked to? This is a great chance to get it out and have a play and share the results with us on our Facebook page. We love to see your creations, too!
